The AWWS I conference was a locally-led climate action summit promoting the acceleration of nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and National Adaptation Plans for African countries.

It facilitated the mobilization of climate financing to support local priorities, particularly in sustainable waste management. The event also attracted investors interested in such models, stimulating economic growth in the region. Additionally, it raised awareness about the environmental impact of waste management and encouraged adoption of sustainable practices by governments and the private sector.The goal of AWWS I was to contribute meaningfully to environmental preservation and address climate change impacts in Eastern Africa.

Themes included Waste Generation and Management, Interventions for Waste Reduction, and Sustainability and Green Innovations. The exhibitions aimed to create a platform for sharing knowledge and innovative approaches to waste management, with a focus on practical and efficient strategies.
